Bovine colostrum–derived extracellular vesicles modulate gut microbiota and alleviate atopic dermatitis via the gut–skin axis

Atopic dermatitis, often called eczema, is a common chronic skin condition that causes inflammation, itching, and discomfort. Scientists from Seoul National University are exploring new ways to treat this condition by focusing on the connection between the gut and skin, known as the gut–skin axis.

The gut microbiota, the community of microorganisms living in our intestines, plays an important role in overall health, including the immune system. When this community is out of balance, it can contribute to inflammatory conditions like atopic dermatitis. Researchers investigated whether extracellular vesicles derived from bovine colostrum, the first milk produced by cows after giving birth, could help restore this balance and improve skin health.

In a mouse model of atopic dermatitis, the team gave oral doses of these bovine colostrum–derived extracellular vesicles (BCEVs) and observed significant improvements. The treated mice showed reduced skin inflammation and lower levels of allergic markers like immunoglobulin E (IgE) and inflammatory molecules such as interleukin-4 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha. Analysis of the gut microbiota revealed that BCEVs helped restore healthy bacterial populations. Additionally, metabolite profiles indicated increased levels of beneficial compounds like lactic acid.

These findings suggest that BCEVs can alleviate atopic dermatitis symptoms by positively influencing the gut microbiome and intestinal metabolites, highlighting the therapeutic potential of targeting the gut–skin axis through extracellular vesicles. This approach could open new avenues for treating immune-related skin diseases.
