Codiak Biosciences is leveraging recent advances in the biology of extracellular vesicles and their role in intercellular communication. Codiak aims to become the world’s leading company in developing exosomes as a new therapeutic and diagnostic modality for the treatment of a wide array of diseases, including cancer. Recent discoveries have demonstrated that exosomes derived from normal cells can act as a potent and safe delivery system for multiple therapeutic payloads. These small vesicles, which leave cells and travel throughout the body, can mediate dramatic effects in animal models of disease. The group has also shown that exosomes derived from cancer cells contain specific proteins on their surface that can be used to quickly detect and characterize cancer from a sample of patient’s blood. They can also be used to monitor the response to cancer treatment, and to detect relapses.
Codiak Biosciences is seeking a Research Associate, Process Analytics to support the development of the novel exosome bioanalytical characterization platform. Responsibilities will include working in an analytical laboratory and implementing the diverse analytical methodologies in the areas related to exosome characterization, including biochemical and biophysical analysis of exosomes and their components, high throughput analytics, formulation, PAT, etc. Relevant background in biochemistry and bioanalytics is needed. Understanding of exosome biology, isolation and characterization is a plus. This is a unique opportunity to contribute experimentally, as well as intellectually, to the process development of a novel exosome production platform.
Demonstrated proficiency in the following are required for this position:
- providing technical/experimental hands-on support to enable process development
- implementation of exosome isolation techniques for further analysis, such as ultracentrifugation, ultrafiltration, SEC;
- implementation of biochemical and biophysical methods for exosome characterization, including particle analysis (NinoSight, Virocyt, DLS); RNA, protein and lipid analysis (gel electrophoresis, CE, HPLC, LC/MS);
- assessment and implementation of relevant high throughput analytical approaches (such as LabChip GXII, Protein Simple, Bioanalyzer, robotic sample handling systems);
- collaborative work with other scientific staff in CMC and Research organizations;
- participation in formulation development studies, as appropriate;
- other duties as required.
This position requires a solid understanding of experiment design and fluency in the scientific concepts that underlie these methodological approaches. The successful candidate will have excellent organization and communication skills, the ability to collaborate effectively, and an enthusiasm for problem solving. As part of a growing start-up company, the incumbent will be uniquely exposed to a broad range of activities both inside and outside of the laboratory.
The ideal candidate will have a BSc or MSc in biochemistry or a similar discipline with over 2 years of industrial experience. Hands on experience with analysis of biomolecules using diverse analytical technologies, such as chromatography, gel electrophoresis, particle analysis, is expected. The knowledge of other biochemical, biophysical and biological methods is a plus. The successful candidate will work under a supervision of an experienced analytical scientist; as well, the ability to work well independently is needed. An ability to work efficiently in a dynamic environment, plan, design and execute experiment in a timely manner and report the results in an organized fashion is critical. Additional qualifications include computer literacy, and excellent interpersonal skills.
