Overview:
A postdoctoral scholar (PDS) is expected to work closely with Dr. Pulliam to achieve the overall research goals of the laboratory. The PDS will be able to work independently on a daily basis. This will include the planning and performance of experiments, and the accurate recording and analysis of data. This is a neurovirology laboratory with a strong emphasis on immunology and exosomes. Techniques will include immunostaining of brain with confocal microscopy, protein extraction and purification, RNA and miRNA arrays, monocyte and exosome isolation and endothelial and neural cell cultures, western blotting, SDS-PAGE, ELISA, and related methods.
Essential Functions:
Responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Design experimental protocols
- Perform experiments
- Analyze and summarize data
- Work with supervisor and her associates to review research progress and plan direction of work
- Prepare written summaries of research for presentation and publication, with assistance form Dr. Pulliam or other senior members of her research group
- Laboratory management: maintain chemical inventory, glass and plastic-ware disposal, updating of MSDS, updating of Current Protocols
- Laboratory supplies: ordering and maintaining inventory
- Prepare manuscripts for submission to journals
- Present talks at national and international meetings
- Prepare applications for extramural funding
Qualifications:
Sufficient education, training or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities, which would typically be acquired through:
1. Ph.D. from an accredited university in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Neuroscience or a related field
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Immunostaining of fixed tissue and confocal and fluorescent microscopy
- Tissue culture
- Monocyte isolation
- Flow cytometry
- Protein isolation and purification
- Standard techniques in microbiology
- Western blotting
- Transfection, PCR, microarrays
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
- Accurate data collection and record keeping
- Database searches
- Computer skills, powerpoint presentations, excel spreadsheets
- Strong oral and written skills
