POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE, Institute for Medical Engineering and Science-Isolation and Characterization of Exosomes Project, to join the team of Dr. Mercedes Balcells-Camps and Professor Elazer Edelman in a research group focused on extracellular vesicles, especially exosomes and microvesicles, which are not merely lipid vesicles, but also carry nucleic acids, proteins, receptors, lipids, and transcription factors, among others. The cargo content of microvesicles is programmed and selected specifically by the secretory cell. Due to its cargo, microvesicles have been implicated in multiple pathologies. Will isolate and separate extracellular and intracellular microvesicles produced by vascular, cancer, and brain cells; characterize isolated microvesicles as function of their size, origin, and load characteristics; and examine if the isolated microvesicles are able to induce phenotypic and genotypic changes on neighboring healthy and diseased cells.  Duties include performing original research, which may include mammalian cell culture under 2D and 3D culture environments and mechanical stimulation (flow), differential ultracentrifugation, sequential centrifugal ultrafiltration or immunocapture, cryo-TEM, qRT-PCR, NGS-DNA Seq, SDS-PAGE, flow cytometry, Western blot, immunofluorescence, and cell function assays in high throughput format.

REQUIRED: Ph.D. in biology, chemistry, materials science, engineering, or relevant field; post-graduate experience in the biological field; experience with isolation and characterization of cell culture supernatants or serum proteins or lipids from bodily fluids; expertise in biology techniques (RNA, DNA, protein isolation and characterization, metabolomics, proteomics); experience with drug delivery (microparticle synthesis, loading, imaging and sorting techniques), a variety of computational biology techniques, software packages (R, MATLAB, Python), -omics databases, and algorithms to analyze -omics data; ability to work independently and collaboratively; and strong publication record.  Experience with animal models and working with hydrogels and perfusion systems a plus.  Job #15201
